From One Spark... to One Noratel
1925
Founded in Norway
It began in 1925, in Lysaker, Norway — not in a boardroom, but in a small workshop where two engineers had a vision: to build radio communication equipment for ships.
What they sparked wasn’t just signal or sound — it was the start of a company grounded in craftsmanship, precision, and quiet ambition.
As the decades unfolded, Noratel evolved.
Radios gave way to transformers. Projects gave way to purpose. And a national name quietly began its journey to becoming a global presence.

1935: The Noratel name is born
With a new identity — Noratel Radioindustri — and a new home in Oslo, we stepped into broader markets. From PA systems to radios and educational equipment, our reach grew — and so did our ambitions.
1956: A new focus
We left radio manufacturing behind to focus entirely on dry insulated transformers and reactors. From this specialisation came expertise that would define our future.
1968: Moving to Hokksund
Operations shifted to a new facility in Hokksund, bringing our teams together under one roof. From this base, we built stronger foundations for the decades ahead.
1975-1985: Becoming Norway's market leader
With standardised safety isolating, control, and lighting transformers, we became Norway’s market leader. From trusted quality came a reputation that travelled far beyond our borders.
1986-1994: Reaching Scandinavia and beyond
Partnerships and acquisitions in Denmark, Sweden, Poland, and Finland marked our first major expansion. From regional growth came the beginnings of a truly international presence.

1996-1999: Strengthening at home
Acquisitions of ABB ESI National Transformer and Ulveco Hamar reinforced our Norwegian roots. From local strength came resilience to grow globally.
2001-2005: Building across Europe
With new footholds in Germany, the Netherlands, and UK our network expanded west. From each new location came fresh opportunities to serve diverse industries.

Noratel's Centennial Celebration: A Look Back at Our Journey
Our recent centennial celebration was a one-of-a-kind moment, bringing together our global teams to reflect on a remarkable 100-year journey. We celebrated our history, our milestones, and—most importantly—the incredible people who have made Noratel what it is today.
2005-2007: Going global
We extended production to Sri Lanka, India, and China, creating a worldwide manufacturing footprint. From local workshops came a global stage.

2012: Crossing the Atlantic
Our presence grew into the United States with our first North American acquisition. This step brought new customers, capabilities, and connections.

2014: Joining the discoverIE Group
Becoming part of discoverIE accelerated our strategic growth and strengthened our global presence. This partnership gave us the confidence to aim higher together.
2016 – 2024 Growing across North America
Our first Canadian site, Plitron, joined in 2016. Hobart Electronics in Indiana became part of Noratel in 2019, alongside our Nogales and Agualeguas teams in Mexico. In 2024, Shape joined, adding new skills and solutions to our portfolio. These additions brought specialised expertise, enhanced customer value, and a stronger presence across North America.

2019 - New Direction
The next chapter began in 2019: with Gregory Malherbe as our new CEO, a new strategy, new leadership team, and the launch of the Noratel Management System.
2025 - The next chapter
A century since our first coil, we stood united as the One Noratel Team. Our shared history inspired us to light the way forward — together.
